One Week Down, How’s It Going?

The June100 Cycling Challenge is one week old today.  I’m going to highlight some initial stats, some standout performances and (hopefully) some motivational points for those of us that haven’t put massive miles in yet.

You can check out everyone’s performance at any time by visiting the Official June100 Spreadsheet.  If you’ve got a login, remember to sign in with you google email address, or just get a new sign-in by using the form here.

Headline Stats

I’ll devise some jerseys soon, I promise.  But for now, here’s the headline table of June100 performance.  If any of this is wrong, let me know and I’ll edit accordingly…

Week 1 of the #June100 Cycling Challenge

Next time I post an update, I promise it will look better than the one above!  But I need to map my own 10.5 mile loop from yesterday.

What’s It All About?

The value of the #June100 was proved to me yesterday, when I got home from an over-eating session with my friend Lee from Presenting Class.  The challenge motivated me to get out along the canal and do 2 laps of Hollingworth Lake before coming back home via Milnrow.  The weather wasn’t great, it was muddy under my tyres and I was a bit knackered.  Normally I’d have settled in front of a recording of Britain’s Got Tosspots and called it a day, but I got myself a bit fitter and I’ll live a bit longer, thanks to the June100.

I’ve noticed my stamina’s improving thanks to the recent rides.  I used my gears a lot less last night, staying happily in the top gear on the middle ring most of the way around my loop.  So thanks, everyone!  You have no idea how much you’re helping me, by joining in my daft challenge! :)

Is it helping you at all?  How’s about some positive stories from you lot….

37 Comments on The #June100 Update – Week 1

  1. This first week has been great for me too, riding just under 40 miles. It’s probably the furthest i’ve ridden in a week in a long long time. I’d like to think I can hit the 100 mark within the next 10 days and see how far I can get beyond the target.

  2. @JobySp says:

I have to say, for some (ie: Phill) its rather good to see the miles clocking up – especially as he’s as irregular as a womans you know whats just before the menopause strikes

  3. Toby Field says:

    I got a mention!

How anyone can do the miles Red Bikes has done is just incredible and in just 1 week!!

  4. Phill says:

I do actually agree with Joby on this one. It’s done exactly what I wanted: got me off my lazy backside and onto the bike for an hour more often. For the first time in ages I went out last night and did a ride that wasn’t just about a long break for tea and cake.

Don’t get me wrong though: I’ll still be riding out for tea & cake a lot. ;) We menopausal women like our comfort food.

Redbikes is some kind of machine. An awesome performance and one I’ll never get near, but great to see people clocking it up.

  5. Positive stories? Positive stories!?

How does 7 farking punctures sound you annoyingly glass half full bastard!

Wanders off muttering stuff about solid rubber tyres…

  6. Redbike says:

    I’m afraid i’ve caused a bit of confusion here. I haven’t done a 180mile ride.

I did 3 shortish rides over two days on the MTB to give me a total of 110miles for the two days. The following day I did a short 65mile road ride to give me 180miles total for the weekend.

The furthest I went in one day was 80miles on the MTB.

  7. Having had the honour of being on a pedal with Red I’ll concur, he’s like some kind of pedalling Robocop. I actually don’t think he’s human…

  8. @JobySp says:

    He is the terminator.

Him and John Berry are like those Duracell rabbits – or an Ariston washing machine.

  9. Redbike says:

“Redbikes is some kind of machine. An awesome performance and one I’ll never get near, but great to see people clocking it up.”

I originally wasn’t going to enter incase i put someone off.
The good news is I’m tapering ready for a 12hr race next weekend so after tonight I wont be doing any more lesuire miles for a few weeks.

  10. @JobySp says:

LOL – but Red – its good you enter, as you cycle miles and it encourages even me to get off my arse and do leisure miles :)

  11. Redbike says:

    “He is the terminator.

Him and John Berry are like those Duracell rabbits – or an Ariston washing machine.”

You kept up on the NCR5. I was the one struggling as we approached Hollyhead!

  12. Phill says:

Oh bugger – that also means that I’ve inadvertently awarded Toby the Week 1 MTB crown when it should’ve been Redbikes.

Shall I give Toby his moment of glory, on the grounds that he’s not Robocop/Duarcell Rabbit/Ariston washing machine?

  13. @JobySp says:

Yes, but Red – I hadn’t ridden 40 miles previously, or 120 miles the previous day :)

  14. Redbike says:

“Shall I give Toby his moment of glory”
Yes, I’m going to stand a high chance of winning it next week with the mileage from 12hrs racing!

Its also worth checking that I haven’t nicked someone elses prize for the road mileage.

  15. @JobySp says:

Now, if leisure miles in the car counted, I’d win that in a week or two with a 350 mile trip (twice) and two 100 mile trips…

Can I include them please – strictly leisure

  16. Chris says:

I agree its been a great success. If it hadn’t been for the lure of hitting the 100 first (actually just before joby ;-) ), then I would have stayed at home on Saturday morning.

As it was, I enjoyed a great ride and fantastic weather. All good stuff.

I wont be doing much this week though, as the Wife is away so I am on baby sitting duty every night…

  17. John Girvin says:

It’s been a great success in motivating people I think. Good idea Phill!

  18. hmmm yeah, great ‘idea’ Phill…

  19. @JobySp says:

Yes Chris – hadn’t we planned to go out together and break the 100 – you bastard!!!

    Agreed John.

  20. Phill says:

Time for Chris to get bike seat/trailer? ;)

I’m genuinely chuffed that this is motivating people though. Not just me.

Enough genuine sentiment, I should do some (edited) swearing soon…. actually I meant to link to Joby‘s smack talk post in this post, I forgot: might edit that in.

  21. Phill says:

I did credit @Ridingthemoor I think, as he rather glumly rears his head ;) It was his initial idea to challenge me to 100 miles in June when I was searching for a kick up the bum, I just figured it might strike a chord – but bloody hell it did. Jon definitely can take a heap of credit for a great idea though. THANKS JON!

  22. oh.. No need for the thanks, Phill! ;-)

  23. Phill says:

:) Well, I do appreciate the nudge in the right direction and I can’t quite believe how well it’s kicked off. But most of all it’s getting me out, and a few other people too. There’s no way I’d have done 20+ miles in a week before this.

Is that enough bromance now? I’m feeling a little queasy.

  24. Chris says:

True Joby, I did feel quite guilty on Saturday morning, but there was not way I was heading into the hills. Your 100 greatest hill challenge its starting to scare me…

I felt slightly less guilty when I texted you and found out you were sill in bed with a hangover.

  25. Same with me, I normally average about 15 miles a week, so to get 38 in this last week is great. I need to be careful and not get carried away and damage summat..

  26. @JobySp says:

Well this is how bad I have it:

14.47 miles this morning (6ish leisure). 7.5 miles dinner. Gonna try and do 16 to 20 on way home. 16 there and back to football. 50 mile commute tomorrow morning…

    There’s no bloody end.

  27. carrie says:

Hey, do I not get a special mention in the female category like :p It’s done me good, I can see I do daft and unnecessary miles, as a result I’m enjoying these short rides more and more, you should see the grin on my face right now. I think the last 10 mile today was a pb in pace, at least outside of a time trial. Fanks Phill

  28. TMWB says:

Sorry Phill ure motivation aint worked on TMWB he is still on his fat arse which is getting bigger by the week.

The way I am going my arse will be bigger than Joby’s sorry I mite be exaggerating a bit there :-)

Congratulations to everyone, though keep it up guys and girls

  29. PhilR says:

Definitely motivational, Sunday morning, wife at work, kids in bed, threat of rain, normally all that would be just cause to sit on my arse and put my feet up. Yesterday I got the kids up and buggered off and left them tidying and got a couple of hours in and thoroughly enjoyed it :)

  30. Phill says:

Carrie, you’re really special and nice and of course being a girl that counts for a lot more than usual. How’s that? ;)

TMWB, do I need to point out that you’ve broken both your elbows, you daft fat-@rsed lump??

PhilR, that’s exactly how I felt after forcing myself out last night. Having said that, I’ve been to the garden centre and chippy tonight! Ride tomorrow I hope.

  31. TMWB says:

Oh Phill you say such the nicest things :-)

  32. Lost says:

As for me, I’ve done a hell of a lot less mileage in the past week than I’d normally do due to breaking the bike. Now, I think I’ve broken myself :(

  33. carrie says:

suggest a giant bike ride up here at the end like, you can all sleep on my floor. ;)

  34. Phill says:

A ride up to NotManyToastersInTheShops to see Carrie? Cool. I’m going to keep it in the bank for the Manchester to Blackpool run though. No offence like ;)

  35. Austin says:

REDBIKES is not human. Seriously. Only explanation.

  36. Phill says:

From this day forth, I shall call him RoboRedbikes.
