Hello? #June100 Helpdesk?

It’s FAQ Time

Following a number of issues of user error… erm, I mean .. technical difficulties with the June100 spreadsheet, I thought I should stick a little tech post here.

Basically, if you have an issue with the spreadsheet or the rules, post it here and the wonderfully supportive community will answer it for you.  Failing that, the ridiculously sarcastic community will pillory you for your ineptitude.

To Get The Ball Rolling:

The most common issue has been not being able to update the spreadsheet.  To avoid this, do this:

  1. Log into your Google Account with the email address you sent in the June100 Registration Form;
  2. Select “Account Settings” then “Docs” on your Google page
  3. You should see a link to the June100 spreadsheet.  Click it.
  4. A new window will open.  If you can’t edit it, your login hasn’t been saved, so you will have to click the “Sign In” link at the top right hand side.
  5. Next time you log in to Google, click the “Stay Signed In” tickbox just below your password.  Your paranoia about saving passwords might be what’s causing you to be unable to punch you mileage in.

Anything Else?

Stick your questions / issues below and let’s see how we can sort it out for you, eh?  Thanks! 🙂

Can you help me? Joby Spragg keeps jumping above my number of leisure miles. If I was to build in a calculation to divide his miles by, say, 2 or 3, would this been deemed anti-competitive or unfair? Or perhaps I could deduct 1 mile for every time he swears on his blog – a kind of #June100 Swear Box. He’d soon be in negative miles. 🙂

  2. Phill

Excellent suggestions. I’ll put them to our development team….

*pause whilst Phill talks to dev team*

They said no. Bloody techies. 🙂

  3. Clive Chapman

Can we have Redbikes banned please? He has an unfair advantage, being young, fit, thin and clearly clinically insane.

  4. TMWB

Ahemm I av a question can miles thinking of cycling on the settee be counted and put in the spreadsheet if ure an invalid 🙁

  5. John Berry

Please mr can I join 🙂

I’m not mad or insane….but I reckon I may be able to kick Red Bikes of the top slot :-)…Oh and ALL of my miles are leisure miles…its to far to commute by bike 🙁

  6. Clive Chapman

Thanks Toby, I think all non obese (fat) bikers should be banned anyway, who do they think they are the skinny buggers. What chance does it give us lardys if we have Tour de France wannabes taking part?

  7. @phillconnell

John Of course, just use the sign up form linked all over this blog, get yourself in!

Clive & Toby, maybe we should have a BMI column in the spreadsheet to give a “Miles Per Lardarse” evaluation? I could give a virtual jersey in XXL for the winner.

  8. Clive Chapman

Make it XXXL and you have a deal. As for measuring BMI is that the “Can you pinch an inch” thing from a few years back? If so I can pinch a bloody great fistful! 🙁

  9. Phill

Yeah, BMI is basically pinching an inch. The scientists who devised it would argue that it’s better, but it just isn’t. 😉

  10. Toby Field

A BMI column would be an interesting one. All those with a BMI of less than 25 can’t win 🙂

Hi. Sorry Phill, but I’m going to have to leave the challenge before I even began it. Dolores and I have been devastated.

The Dr has finally worked out that the pains and troubles I have been having for a very long time are osteoarthritis. Simple enough to diagnose, but its been confused with the side-effects of various tablets, poor posture and until recently, psychosomatic! Which might explain why it didn’t get treated. I’ve even given up teaching in order to sort whatever it was out.

Whatever; it’s confirmed and the pain is too much for me at the moment to start cycling through. I’ve signed up for swimming lessons instead and I’m going to learn to swim because there’s less joint impact. Ive promised myself I WILL get on Dolores by the end of the month – but I won’t be doing 100 miles.

Well done the rest of you. Keep on going! Seems like the BMI is a good idea. Use age as a marker too and you can develop some form of handicap for some of them, eh? Like horses. 🙂

Enjoy the rest of the challenge; I’m going to watch it with interest. X Christine

Toby / Phill my BMI is over 25 so I’m ok with that :p

There are many things flawed with the challenge – and maybe we can all devise a better one for the coming months. People are members of clubs, people can work from home and whats more surprising, it seems that some people have lives outside of cycling 🙂 etc etc.

Christine, I’ve just had a quick read of your condition – sounds painful and I only hope that you can get it under control.

  13. chris

I agree the challenge is flawed in many ways. People ride different bikes, on different terrain with different size belly’s. However, I think its got lots of people out doing more riding than usual, so its a success…

I guess nobody has been told about the real competition, the #JulyDelta, where the winner is the person who improves on their #June100 mileage the most 😉

  14. Phill

You lot, of course the rules are flawed, but Chris rightly points out that if it’s got some of us on our bikes more often, then the scheme’s worked. I can say with absolute certainty that it’s worked for me!

Christine, it’s a shame you can’t join in, but at least you know where you stand now and I hope that swimming and some targeted treatment will make things easier. It’s a whole different ballgame, but I remember 20 years ago, how relieved I felt to find out I had a treatable condition and that I wasn’t just wasting away and feeling knackered for no good reason. Good luck going forwards, and let us know how you go on.

For the record, my BMI’s over 25 too 🙂 As is everybody’s in the world it seems. Stupid measurement, and I won’t bang on about how flawed it is – others have done so at length already on many other blogs.

Austin, another flaw in my June100 challenge is the absence of EPO and crack testing. Hence RoboRedbike’s position is unchallenged – except by John Berry!

  15. Christine

Thanks for the messages, Phill and Joby. It is what it is and I’ll be fine as with TLC and forward planning. 🙂 Take care.

  16. JobySp

Christine TLC is the way forward. I have a dodgy chest condition and beat the hell out of it, and just suffer in pain for days, weeks and months afterwards.

I can’t put my daughter on my shoulders without suffering for 2 days afterwards, but as you sat – it is what it is.

Learn to live with it and adjust your lifestyle, or beat the shit out of your body and suffer much later in life like I imagine I will be doing 🙂

There’s plenty of support on here, regardless of condition, so you know where we are if you need a kick up the backside 🙂

    Chris
Count me out of the July Delta – my mileage has been appalling this month already.

  17. Phill

Chris, me too. I’ve been thinking how best to take this forward when the June100 month comes to an end, but it might be time to hand the mantle to somebody else. Well volunteered!

  18. carrie

@ Christine In the spirit of generosity you can have 10 of my miles for every lap you swim.

The challenge hasn’t worked out so well for me, I set out to cut my monthly miles by 100 and now its the middle of the month and I stand at 300 bang on track for my usual 600 miles 🙁

  19. JobySp

Go Christine and do 60 laps… Swim like you’ve never swam before… Leaving Crrie on -300 for June 😉

  20. Phill

Carrie, you’re such a contrary madam, as my Mum used to say about my sister. The only person I can think of who’s ever used a mileage challenge to reduce your cycling.

  21. carrie

Joby you are just sore cos yer being trounced by a big pink shoe wearing girl!
