Things Achieved

I’ve not been very happy with myself this month. Focusing on the rides, I’m going to be very lucky if I hit 50 miles in the November 100 challenge, which doesn’t make me proud.

However, a quick look at the goals I set way back in January has made me feel much better.

  • With your help, I’ve raised over £500 for Springhill Hospice, a wonderful and necessary place where they looked after my Mum until she left them, and us, in December last year.
  • I completed the Manchester to Blackpool ride, the first time for me in 9 years and a major step in becoming the fitter bloke I want to be.
  • I’ve ridden over 600 miles this year, something which I absolutely know I would never have done without this blog and the support that so many people have given me.

So, now I feel better.

The community which I’ve joined whilst writing this blog has been a massive source of motivation for me.  Cajoling, mickey-taking and gentle but firm pokes in the (virtual) ribs have been extremely necessary.  I’m not self-motivated enough to get the shed door open on these cold nights and without you lot it simply wouldn’t happen.

So I just wanted to say thanks.  You’ve helped me a lot.  Give yourselves a pat on the back. 🙂

My Final 2010 Goal

I’ve not put this into the little box on the right, so I’m putting it here.  I reckon I can force myself to clock up a total of 700 miles in 2010, so I’m publishing that to force myself to try.

God, I hope I do it now.

So… who’s going our for a ride in the next few days?

Top pedalling feller, 700 miles? A walk in the park, or should I say pedal in the park!

Cold nights? That’d be more layers then… 😉

Yes, quite! Wednesday night’s kit was… base layer; tshirt;long sleeved cycling top; berghaus fleece; altura cycling jacket; short liners; ron hill running tights; normal socks; winter cycling socks; buff; beanie hat.

Plus of course shoes and helmet. Oh and sealskinz winter gloves.

My legs got a bit chilly but otherwise I was toasty. It was a brilliant dark ride! 🙂

Jaysus! That’s layered! I wear base layer, T Shirt and my cycling jacket on top, cycling shorts, cycling tights and waterproof trousers on my legs, I suppose my fat layer helps, but bloody hell!

  4. Phill

I might invest in some cycling tights 😉

The headgear’s the biggie for me, I’d get serious earache without my lovely buff. Best bit of fabric I own without a doubt.

Cheers! Me too, when I’ve done my chores. Scumbags tried to nick my lead flashing over the porch. Need to bodge a repair until I can get it done properly.

Note to scumbags: GET A JOB! SCUMBAGS. 🙁

    Top pedalling there!

Us biking bloggers will always help a fellow BB in whatever way we can 🙂 Granted I haven’t been about much since the beginning of autumn cos of breakages, but I’m still here mentally prodding you to get out and pedal your way round Hollingworth Lake 🙂

Layering is key for winter. I’ll wear compression thermal base layer, thin jersey and thermal windproof jersey/softshell on top; thermal bibtights; many pairs of socks with overshoes over the shoes. A beanie goes on under the helmet, a buff round the neck to be pulled up if need be to keep the lower face warm. I don’t do bulky winter bike gloves, so i wear full finger bike gloves under normal woolly-type gloves. I stay toasty, my skills improve as I ride in snow and I get my miles in. Sorted 🙂

You’re dead right. I think the only layer I’m missing is an extra one on the legs. Other than that I was very comfy on Wednesday night.

I sympathise with your situation, and I hope you heal soon once the process kicks in properly. I think the Lake might be a brwe stop this afternoon once I get going 🙂 Unfortunately I’m leaving it until after lunch so I feed up properly so I can’t see me hitting 50 today, but I will get a few miles in before it starts getting cold.

Get a pair of legwarmers and shove them on under tights or baggies, whichever you wear. They should do the trick 🙂

I’ve another clinic review in a few weeks, so we’ll see then whether I get mechano or not. Either way. i think it’ll be a long healing process 🙁

Might do that! All the best for the clinic, and maybe a bit of Barry Sheen meccano will help you along. Interesting in airport checkins, too.

Furthermore it is the responsibility of the back-patting person to recognise if they possess the skills to back-pat. Although the employer must recognise that they should make sure that training has been provided where needed.

As for me: I didn’t back-pat. I may have commented occasionally as we pedalled through the year, but nothing that deserves such an accolade. But this shall change. Immediately: well done Phill. Keep it up.

Now, where do I give the “firm poke”?
